Nephrology

The Nephrology Department has a full time Senior Consultant Nephrologists and has been functioning since last 3 years. It caters to both Cold Nephrology and Hot Nephrology acute cases. The clinical spectrum of cases includes both Acute Kidney Injury and Chronic Kidney Injury, Electrolyte problems, Urinary tract infections, Pre Transplant Workup, Nephrolithiasis, Acid bases problems and Pre Operative assessments.

The Department provides free Dialysis for the CMCHIS patients and also provides free food for all Dialysis patients. The department is initiating a rural screening project for CKD and also involved in screening for Renal Stone diseases along with the department of Community Medicine.

The Nephrology Unit caters to patients with Chronic or acute renal failure. We have a modern in centre Hemodialysis unit with a Reverse Osmosis Plant.

The Dialysis unit is open Monday through Saturday. Presently, chronic maintenance Hemodialysis patients are allotted places in either of the two daily shifts. Care is provided by well trained health care professionals including Physicians, nurses, Technicians and dieticians.

At present the unit provides both chronic intermittent Hemodialysis and also acute dialysis as and when required. We offer peritoneal dialysis and CRRT in the ICU. The Nephrology OPD runs from Monday through Saturday.

  • 6 Bedded Hemodialysis unit with state of the art hemodialysis machines with monitoring (invasive), tending to both acute and chronic Hemodialysis patients, ward inpatients and ICU patients.
  • Assisted by trained technicians, Hemodialysis nurses and attenders.
  • Regular daily nephrology clinics throughout the week with routine admissions for AKI, CKD, and for initiation of Dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis for AKI / CKD patients started. Invasive central HD lines.

World Kidney Day 14th March 2013 organized CME on Heart vs. Kidney to create awareness on Kidney disease.

Written up a Rural survey screening project on screening for CKD in Rural Pondicherry. Planning to initiate a Global rural survey project and have a model for chronic Kidney disease progression.

Faculty & Postgraduate students attended workshops on Ethics in Medical Research at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital in May 2013.

Faculty & Postgraduate students attended workshop on Data collection and accumulation into database at Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital in May 2013 EPI-INFO SOFTWARE WORKSHOP. The main thrust has been on preventive Nephrology as the treatments are very expensive and burden of disease is tremendous affecting not only the patient but the family, society and productivity. Have been teaching, advising Patients, Families, Students, Paramedical & Medical staff on prevention of renal disease
