Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Our hospital is renowned for its maternity and paediatric services. The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology offers comprehensive Gynaecological service, ranging from routine examination and family planning to highly specialized procedures. Common problems treated include abnormal uterine bleeding uterine fibroids, Plevic infections, Endometriosis and loss of bladder control. Department is well equipped to cater the needs of a wide range of patients and acts as a referred center for the surrounding villages. A team of specialties is available throughout the day to offer the following services.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital was started in the year 2002. Since its inception it has grown into one of the well established departments of the Institution. The Department offers state of art treatment to all classes of patients. The department receives out patients and emergency referral of high risk patients from surrounding areas of both Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The services of a trained specialist and a team of doctors are available 24 hours a day.


Our museum is well stocked with specimens of Obstetric and Gynaecological disorders and photographs of personalities who made significant contribution to Obstetrics and Gynaecology.


In addition to the books in central library our department is provided with a library which has all books for ready reference of Undergraduates and Postgraduates.

Equipments and Instruments

Other than the routine instruments we have special equipments like ultrasonograms (one each in OP & Labour ward). Colposcopy, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, cryocautery, Cardiotocogram etc.

Outpatient Department

It has well equipped rooms where personalized care is given for all patients by our team of specialists. Our OPD is provided with Colposcope, Ultrasonogram with Colour Doppler facilities for special care of the patients.

In addition to general Obstetric and Gynaecological services our department also conducts the following special clinics on regular basis.

Inpatient Department

Patients admitted to Obstetrics and Gynaecological wards are offered 24 hours care by our specialists, backed by well equipped Labour ward and Operation Theatre facilities. Most investigations and treatments are done free of cost.

Labour Ward

Obstetrics and Gynaecological department has well maintained air conditioned and spacious Labour ward provided with central supply of Oxygen and equipments for dealing with any emergencies and operative vaginal deliveries. 24 hours care is given by experienced Obstetrician with dedicated operation room in Labour ward for Obstetrics.

Ultrasound and Electronic Fetal Monitoring is also available in Labour ward.

Operation Theatre

In addition to regular Obstetric and Gynaecological surgeries, special procedures like Hysteroscopy, Cryotherapy, Gynaecological laparoscopy, Myomectomy, Tubal reconstructive surgeries and vaginal reconstructive surgeries are also under taken.

The Labour room and Operation theatre is backed by good post operative ward with intense monitoring of patients and Blood Bank facility with availability of Whole Blood , packed cells, Fresh frozen plasmas and platelet concentrates.

Academics Activities

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has a full fledged teaching program encompassing both Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

Undergraduates Training

The Undergraduates are taught core subjects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the first clinical year. They undergo a teaching program spread over three years encompassing

  • Clinical Teaching
  • Theatre Observation
  • General clinics
  • Symposium

Evaluation is done throughout the course of study by Log book, Ward leaving exams, Monthly assessment, Internal assessment and Model exams. They also undergo 8 weeks of CRRI posting in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, where they are allowed to handle cases under supervision and also assist in surgeries.

Post graduates Training

The post graduate Degree course (M.D.) is structured with objective of combining good theoretical knowledge, patient care and surgical skills.

The Post graduate teaching is conducted at daily bedside rounds and also in the form of lectures and discussions. It includes

  • Grand Rounds
  • Journal clubs
  • Symposiums
  • Lecture classes etc.

Applied learning is encouraged in Labour room, management of high risk patients and emergencies and in operating room services.

They are also taught newer modalities of patient care like Carditocography, Ultrasound Doppler, Colposcopy, Hysteroscopy and Laparoscopy.

Post graduates are also encouraged to undertaken various researches and to present papers in conferences and for publications.

Teaching programme is backed by -

  • Internet facility for further study and reference.

Clinical Activities

Special Clinics
Infertility clinic

It provides meticulous clinical examination of infertile couples, relevant investigations like hormonal profile, follicular study, tubal patency test, Ovulation induction, intra uterine insemination and counseling the couple for the different modalities of treatment.

Antenatal clinic

In addition to regular ante care given, special clinics is conducted for care of high risk pregnant patients and their counseling.

Family Welfare clinic

It provides counseling regarding various family planning methods, importance of spacing and free supply of condom, oral contraceptive pills and insertion of Copper T.

Cancer screening clinic

Here women are screened for cervix, ovary and uterine cancers by means of pap smear, colposcopic guided biopsy if pap smear is abnormal, Transvaginal ultrasound, Tumour markers etc.

Menopause clinic

It provides counseling and treatment for pre and post menopausal women. Also cancer screening is done in all these patients.

Endocrine clinics

It provides personalized care in detecting and treating various Endocrine disorders.

MTP clinics

It provides counseling for avoiding unwanted pregnancies and safe MTP services for indicated patients.

Special Procedures

Special procedures like Colposcopy, Diagnostic hysteroscopy,Laparoscopy, Cryotherapy, Tubal reconstructive surgeries, Vaginal reconstructive surgeries etc. are performed.

Other Activities

Facility members have undergone special training in Ultrasound,

Hysteroscopy and Laparoscopy, Colposcopy.
